Sorry to miss the stream but since you’re talking about iPads my mum uses one as her only computer too! A 9th gen with Smart Keyboard. She likes it MUCH better than having a laptop. She just needs to email/message and search for items for her antiques business, so it’s perfectly portable and versatile for her.

We've been betrayed... 25 years ago Apple revolutionize the computer industry by combining the computer and the monitor into a single machine. How can it be called a progress when you now have to buy a separate computer and plug it with a separate monitor with cords and shit. Or is it simply a case of market manipulation to MAKE customers buy two expensive pieces of equipment instead of one. I want to upgrade my existing 27" iMac with an older intel chip. I don't want a separate monitor and a super powerful computer. As a pro photographer I can't go from a 27" 5K display to a 24" 4.5K. Sorry but that's a regress not progress. How many 27" iMacs have Apple sold over the years? Not enough? Hardly. The big question is why they don't deliver a larger pro or semi pro iMac with 27-30" monitor? A: They can't (not likely. They've done it for 25 years...) B: They wont (more likely). C: They feel like they don't make enough money doing it? Maybe it's because Apple has become TOO BIG for graphics professionals. Please remember it was really the graphics professionals who made Apple big. Now we don't matter anymore! F..c Apple inc. PS: I have several 27" iMacs and had in the past probably 20+ iMacs and other macs for 30 years. MBP's, MB air's, MB's, iPhones, watches etc. What's the point being a loyal Apple advocates if we can't have the most important piece of equipment that actually helps us make money so we can buy more Apple stuff....?

I'm very happy with iPadOS. The widgets are great and I can get a quick look at my day and the things that are of importance to me at a glance. I like to read books, documents, watch or listen to podcasts and it's really great for all of those things. I do productivity and professional stuff on macOS. Most things that I do on the Mac require a lot of typing and I prefer a mechanical keyboard and mouse or trackpad for a lot of typing and switching between windows. On USB-C, the port was stiff on the iPad mini 6 but has loosened up. The iPad mini 6 is great but I should have gone with 256 GB instead of 64 GB. I can fit everything I need in 64 GB but I have to shuffle things around. If I did get a 256 GB model, my daughter would have taken it. When the mini 7 comes out, I'll order it with 256 GB and it goes to our daughter and my wife gets the iPad mini 5. She doesn't think that she needs an iPad but she'll absolutely love having one. USB-C is really growing on me and I'm at the point where I wish my iPhone 13 mini were USB-C. My current approach on traveling is to pack 3 USB-C cables and I have these tiny adapters for Micro-USB, my Garmin watch, and Lightening. I expect to use my iPhone mini for another 3 years but will then look at USB-C iPhones - hopefully they have a small model out in the future. If they do come out with another mini, even for just a year, I'll pounce on it. My Beats Fit Pro and Beats Flex have USB-C charging so we're all moving to that world. You do the laundry and dishes? I do them in my household too. I've worked using my brain all of my life and I like some chores that require no thinking to relax. I also listen to podcasts when working out and doing chores.

I did watch your barbershop quartet with your other buddies on the TikTok app and I gotta tell you you guys are pretty good. I hope you do more of that, but I guess I have to look for it on TikTok and not on RUclips. Singing is good for the soul. Keep it up.

You were spot on. My MacBook Air m2 in midnight blue showed a very noticeable paint chipping on the right corner. The silver is showing through the midnight blue. Didn't drop it, I use a case every day, but I guess it bumped into something. I'm using a black sharpie to hide it. It still rubs off, but at least it's not as noticeable anymore.

#icaveanswers I’m so glad Apple has ditched the car idea. We do NOT need more cars in the world. Now I don’t think Apple is going to make a tram/train/bus, but I would be very interested in an Apple e-bike with Find My capability and cycling directions through Apple Maps with a display (like a pared-down version of CarPlay, no notifications though, of course). A slot in the frame for your iPhone to charge with MagSafe? What are your thoughts?

Great episode. I "lucked out" with respect to Apple AI by upgrading from my iPhone 11 Pro to a 15 Pro just prior to the 2024 Eclipse (I guess strictly speaking, I wasn't watching from "the colonies", but drove to various places looking for clear sky from Alabama and ended up in Marion, IL to watch the eclipse. Phone did not do a good job with the eclipse, itself (though it did show Venus and Jupiter in the afternoon, which was cool), but the panorama and the quickie movie I made which focused more on the terrestrial effects of the eclipse were good. I loaded iPadOS 18 (Beta) on my iPad and it has been stable, though I don't use it hard or very often. I mainly went beta to try out Math Notes and am a little disappointed as it can't handle all the "maths". In particular it will do some basic stuff including exponentiation and trig, and it has built in constants for things like "e" and "PI", but it doesn't recognize the Greek letter for pi, nor does it seem to know about complex (a+bi) numbers; as an example, cannot solve for the square root of -1. I also am having difficulty with trying to consistently select items I've written so that I can delete them. Some of my issues (maybe most of them) could simply be that I just don't know enough about how to make stuff work with Math Notes; I found no youtube tuts on Math Notes on day one, I'll look for some again and maybe after leveraging some other folks's understanding I'll find it more useful and easier to use.

Great one! Only thing I know for sure about AI is that I don’t want it harvesting my info. The more it can stay on chip (or at least within my device constellation) the better.

Good reason to get an iPad mini 7 whenever they come out. It's possible that they're going to make some chip changes to better support local AI. I suspect that we're going to get an iPad mini 7 with 256 GB of storage and give our daughter's iPad mini 5 to my wife. Our daughter does a lot of artwork on the iPad mini 5 and 64 GB of storage is a real problem. She would probably appreciate the newer Apple Pencil too. I'm fine with the mini 6. What do you think Intel and AMD are going to do after the very good benchmarks from the new Qualcomm Windows devices? Gamers are going to still by x86 but I think that Microsoft will push hard to migrate gaming to ARM.

I think that I'd prefer a small MacBook at 10-12 inches over any kind of iPad with keyboard and trackpad. When I want to multitask, I use a Mac. If you could run macOS on iPads, then that would be a completely different story. I generally carry my iPad mini around with me to check on things when I'm out and about where my iPhone mini screen is too small. I usually don't need to do extensive typing when I'm out and about and plan to explore dictation speech to text in the future for that sort of thing.

I've been embarking on a similar project with a Macintosh Plus. Also using an iPad display with a Chinese HDMI driver board, but I purchased a brand new 'replacement LCD' for an iPad 3. Not needing to dismantle an old iPad seemed worth while. As for the Underscan issue, yeah, it's a headache. I ended up finding that the app SwitchResX allows you to enable underscan for any display. It also allows custom resolutions at 1x and retina 2x. The Display doesn't like booting up in 'underscan' mode though, so I have to remember to turn underscan off before turning the mac off, then I can turn it on once it boots. I've thought about finding an HDMI video processor that does 'hardware' underscan, but because the iPad display is 4x3, and everything is 16x9 these days, that's almost an impossibility. Thankfully my controller doesn't have that weird 'needs an external display' issue that you're facing. As for the powerbutton thing. I configured the mac to 'restart automatically after power failure', and never shut the mac down. I sleep it, and then kill power while it's sleeping - not at all ideal, but it's hasn't caused any issues yet‽

Don’t see any need to upgrade my M1 iPad Pro, even if the new one has a pretty screen and some weight loss. Couldn’t possibly justify the Apple Magic Keyboard for how much I’d use it, but this looks like a great option!

I have the 2018 iPad Pro. I am asking myself the question, can I still do all that I need on the iPad Pro as a tablet. Answer, yes. Does the iPad Pro M4 give me anything in terms of a new OS to operate as a stand alone computer in all ways. Answer, no. So I conclude I will not be upgrading.

tried a few other "complex" things.... looks like Math Notes doesn't know about complex numbers. Imagine that!

For fun I tried to graph the simplest parabola (y=a*x**2) for various "a". It didn't like it when I made a complex number (3+4i), but it didn't crash, just blanked the lotus of points off the graph.

As far as I can tell, you can't scribble into Math Notes with your finger... looks like a pencil is required to use it "by hand".

MathNotes works with on-screen "keyboard" ... Just ordered Gen 2 Pencil knock-off that should work OK. NOTE: the Calculator function has three modes, controlled by widget in the lower left. Basic (4-ish function), Scientific and Math Notes.

iPad Pro 11" (3rd gen) still working after installing iPadOS 18 Beta. No promises that everything on it works. seems like it may be having a little problem synching with iCloud, but that isn't critical for me right now.
